Club History
Six friends who had played League Table Tennis together for many years decided they wanted a change of sport and formed Ringswell Badminton Club in September 1980.
The first Club night was 5th September 1980 and the venue was the School Hall at the former Vincent Thompson High School in Exeter (now known as St Lukes). Vincent Thompson was situated in Ringswell Avenue – hence the club name. Due to club growth we had to leave our one court hall at Vincent Thompson several years ago. We now play in Sports Halls with four and five Courts respectively.
The first season consisted of six members playing once a week. Friendly matches were arranged against other teams in the area and soon the Club attracted new members.
Three years after being formed the Club entered its first team in the Exeter and District Badminton League winning its first tournament the following year in 1984 in the Exeter and District Knockout competition with an enormous handicap of +8!
Since then the Club has grown in strength and numbers and now has membership in excess of 50 fully paid up and life members with the age group ranging from early 20s to the over 60s and with teams in most of the Exeter and District Badminton League divisions.
Ringswell prides itself on one of the friendliest sociable clubs in the Exeter and District Area – with social events and club tournaments being arranged throughout the season by its Committee.
If you would like to come along to the Club and have a look at us in action please feel free to drop on by. We now play on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm at the following venues:
Monday: Exeter School – Manstone Terrace Exeter
Thursday: Maynard School – Spicer Road Exeter
